Breakthrough research published in CNS Spectrums reveals patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) participating in a kundalini yoga protocol had a 71% improvement in symptoms on the Yale - Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale.
Researchers at Children's Hospital, San Diego, California, assigned 22 patients with OCD either to a kundalini yoga protocol or a Relaxation Response plus Mindfulness Meditation Technique class. The two groups participated in 1 hour classes weekly for 3 months.
The kundalini yoga protocol was devised specifically for patients with OCD. The other group practiced standard Relaxation Response and Mindfulness Meditation techniques.
Researchers found the kundalini yoga group had significant improvement in symptoms. However, the relaxation/mindfulness group did not show symptoms improvement.
The two groups were merged for another year of kundalini yoga treatment. At 15 months, the final group had a 71% improvement in symptoms on the Yale - Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale.
"This study demonstrates that kundalini yoga techniques are effective in the treatment of OCD," the researchers conclude.
